APC ELECTION PRIMARIES IN EBONYI STATE: THREE PERSONS CONFIRMED DEAD, AMIDST FRACAS

Ogeh Friday Igiri Reporting From Abakiliki For Family Writers Press

The election primaries of All Progressive Congress Party (APC), conducted on Thursday 4th October 2018, at Darling Hotel, Onueke, ended in bloodbath as three persons were instantly confirmed shot dead and properties worth millions of naira, wantonly destroyed by political thugs. During the fracas, quite a number of individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries while a total figure of six vehicles were set ablaze.

The APC election primaries which got abruptly disrupted, was held at the popular Darling Hotel situated in Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi Senatorial district, adjacent to Ezza Eke Imoha. According to an APC delegate who witnessed the controversies, he narrated that the venue of the ill-fated exercise became troubled on the arrival of Comrade Chinedu Oga who was an erstwhile Ebonyi State Youth Assembly President and presently, standing in as a constituency candidate for Ikwo Ezza South, Ebonyi Central. He defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressive Congress party (APC) earlier in the year. He is already being accused for anti-party activities by the Ebonyi State APC, for his relationship with a PDP Senatorial flagbearer, Senator Julius Ali Ucha. The APC delegate to the election primaries stressed that "People were already set to select candidates of their choices when Chinedu Oga came in with his entourage and suddenly began sharing money up to  the sum of twenty five thousand naira (N25,000), to each of the groups on queue. He was urging them to cast their votes for his preferred candidates. This attracted some scrambles and rowdiness, leading to fisticuffs and exchange of blows. People started scampering for safety as gun shots were sporadically fired. Three persons were instantly shot dead, several others were injured, vehicles set ablaze while I had to run for my dear life", he pointedly stated.

The election primaries were conducted for APC in Ebonyi Senatorial district, to enable party delegates select their respective party flagbearers of different elective positions for the upcoming general elections planned in Nigeria for 2019.

The bodies of the deceased were deposited at Onueke General Hospital Morgue by the Nigerian Police. Amongst the dead, was a young lady aged between 35 and 37 years while the rest were young men.

Another eye witness, revealed that "the attack was plotted by the inner enemies of our party through the ruling PDP in the state, just to blackmail us, not only in Ebonyi State but across Nigeria". He further stated that even the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force that were present during the disturbances, could not handle the situation as they equally were on the run alongside civilians, participants and party delegates.

One of the deceased was identified as Aleke Ifeanyi from Amezekwe in Ezza South local government area. Nevertheless, efforts made to reach members of other deceased families, proved abortive as at the time of filing in this report.

A hardcore family member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Onueke, Mazi Chidi, roundly condemned the dastardly act displayed, saying "it is completely ridiculous and a slap on the face of the entire Ezza nation for such atrocities to take place in our land". He enjoined all well meaning Ezza citizens and of course all Ebonyians, to fully support the IPOB ably led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on the agitation drive for the total restoration of the nation of Biafra and the unfettered freedom of the people from the evil contraption called Nigeria. He maintained that election in Nigeria is a "do or die affair" and that no effort made to remedy the situation will yield positive results, because the country has long expired.
