The bandits were provoked after the vigilantes from Cigama village came to offer help for the residents of neighbouring Kokeya when, they were being attacked by the bandits in a broad daylight.
Daily Trust learnt that the armed bandits went to Cigama to confront the vigilantes there. "Dozens of them arrived and started firing at residents and setting residential houses ablaze," a witness Isa Shuaibu further explained.

A resident of the village Aliyu Cigama told Daily Trust that after killing a good number of people they also carted away herds of cows and sheep before they fled.
Birnin Magaji local government chairman Alhaji Muhammad Bala Gusami put the death toll at over 30. "The bandits first arrived at Kokeya village and shot dead 2 residents there. I informed the DPO of the local government, and he mobilized security personnels and patrolled the village and shortly after the police left they came back and started killing people and corpses are being collected from the outskirt of the village" he added.
