The Illegal Detention of Nnamdi Kanu

The Illegal Detention of Nnamdi Kanu
By Okonkwo Isaac Somto
(For Family Writers)
Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra and the leader of indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) has been unlawfully arrested by the Department of state services (DSS), after he had flown from the UK, where he lives, to Lagos Nigeria on his way to Biafra land. He was detained at the Tullip hotel, Lagos, on Wednesday, 13th October, 2015 and was later flown to Abuja.  As many of you know Nnamdi Kanu, in his message for freedom always preached about non-violence when demonstrating and marching for the freedom of Biafra.  Nigeria though a country where the leaders and her government, have often use the method of violence against the people of Biafra. They have killed and wounded hundreds of Biafrans for the past few months that were marching and demonstrating their rights to be free.  And they are still killing Biafran’s who have rallied and demonstrated their anger towards the illegal detention of their leader Nnamdi Kanu. They have arrested Nnamdi Kanu without proper course or reason and that is a violation of human rights law, constitution democracy, humanitarian norms and the principle of law.

This just shows the amount of lawlessness in Nigeria, the Nigerian government should know that all Biafran’s protesting today are not only doing that because of Nnamdi Kanu, but, are also using the opportunity to outlet their disappointment, frustration, and anger for the hardship they are going through in the midst of plenty. Nigeria government has always violated international human rights law and yet nothing has been done about it. Or is Nigeria not part of the international human rights law? Of course they are, but when it comes to the killing of innocent Biafrans, the whole world stay silent. These are countries that promote and protect human rights at the international, regional, and domestic levels. And yet they watch Nigeria violate every human rights law known to man. Nigeria have been killing and torturing Biafrans for so many years now, yet the whole world stay silent while innocent Biafrans are been killed every single day.

Nnamdi kanu is a true Biafra leader, this is man who have suffered and sacrificed a lot to make sure Biafra must be free from her oppressor Nigeria. A man whose weapon is truth, nothing empowers the spirit more than truth. He has never acted with violence; Biafrans don’t use guns or any weapon when demonstrating. Instead the only weapon they use is the weapon of truth. Nigeria is built on lies and deception, so the only way Biafrans can be free from such bondage is to fight Nigeria with truth. With truth comes justice, healing, restoration, redemption and the chance for new beginnings. Biafrans have been using “the weapon of truth” to show the whole world how evil Nigeria truly is. A country that cannot differentiate between those that seek to peacefully exercise their right of self-determination and those that terrorize, kill and maim others in an attempt to impose their faith.

The United Nations (UN), the Africa union (AU), the organization of American states (OAS) and the council of Europe, Are all international organizations designed to promote and protect human rights at the international level, regional, and domestic levels. These organizations have areas of responsibility, such as: • Promoting human and people’s rights • Protecting human and people’s rights • Interpreting the African charter on human and people’s rights • Strengthening democracy • Working for peace • Combating corruption • the rights of indigenous peoples; and promoting sustainable development. What’s the use of these organizations if they are not effective? Yes, when it comes to other countries they are effective but when it comes to Nigeria and Biafra, they become ineffective. They stand aside and watch Nigeria break and violate every human right law. What have they done since Director Nnamdi Kanu was illegally abducted by the Nigerian DSS? Nothing! They have done nothing and said nothing. The amount of injustice been directed to the Biafran people is unfair and unjust. Biafrans have the right to exercise free speech, protests and demonstrations without being shot at and killed. They have the right to speak out and say they no longer want to be a part of the Nigerian project.

I believe it is the alienable right of any human being or ethnic nationality to aspire to be free and to be able to determine its own destiny. The right to self-determination is enshrined in international law. It is a right that has been exercised successfully over and over again in world history and it has led to the creation of new nations which were carved out of older ones. So I also believe that Biafrans has the right to exercise these laws. Therefore am calling for the support of The United Nations (UN), the Africa union (AU), the organization of American states (OAS), the council of Europe and anyone who believes Biafrans also have the right to exercise these laws, to help stop the injustice been done to the Biafran people. I also call for the immediate realize of Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra and the leader of indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), who has been held unjust fully by the Nigeria DSS.
