Over 60 Killed & 90 Injured in Maiduguri Multiple Explosions

At least 54 people were killed and 90 wounded in a multiple bomb attack in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Sunday evening, a police spokesman said on Monday.

"A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated IEDs (improvised explosive devices) at a mosque in Ajilari and some insurgents also threw IEDs at a viewing centre. Total casualty figure is now 54," Victor Isuku, a police spokesman in Maiduguri, said.

A Nigerian army spokesman said on Sunday that three bombs had gone off.

Sources from humanitarian agencies told claimed that at least 50 people were killed and 95 badly injured in the multiple explosions. Hospital sources said the death toll corresponded more than 60.

The attack comes shortly after Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau released an audio message in which he described the claimed successes of the Nigerian army as lies. He said the military officials and President Muhammadu Buhari were deceiving people. The terrorist also insisted he was alive, contrary to the statements by the army seniors.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also warned of the rise in death toll due to the severity of the injury sustained by 90 injured casualties.
