BUHARI'S TEST PAPER ON CORRUPTION AND FRAUD DELETION SHOULD BEGIN WITH HIM AS PERFECT EXAMPLE.

Since the amalgamation in 1914 by Britain, corruption and fraud has become household name in Nigeria. There have been many cases of government officials looting the treasury or embezzling funds allocated for projects. The colonial masters started it when they began taking our oil and gas without adequate compensation. The people were poor, their farmland and fishing stream destroyed through incessant oil spillage. Britain rigged the first election census to favor the Hausa Fulani North, teaching Nigeria political corruption. Public funds are seen as National cake, and as such belonging to nobody, to be stolen at every opportunity. Stealing or looting of national or state treasury with no regard of such act as a crime has eaten deep into Nigeria public office holders. They cannot be trusted. Despite many laws in place to check corruption, nothing good has been achieved. THE Yakubu Gowon administration of 1966 to 1975 was neck deep into corruption but was intelligently protected from public knowledge.
His military governors were criticized on being misguided and no action taken against those corrupt elements in power. It was obvious that corruption scandal greeted the importation of cement by his ministry of defense assisted by the central bank. There was a very clear case of falsifying ship manifestos and inflation of amount of cement purchased. OBASANJO's first experiment having taken over from MURTALA focused on implementation of national program and development plans. Such major projects like building new refineries, expanding shipping and airlines, hosting 1977 FESTAC was directly under his command. This project was nothing but embezzlement conduits, and enrichment of those connected politicians. The KBR and SIEMENS bribery scandal which was investigated by FBI led to various level of corruption in his government coupled with the Liquidified Natural Gas NLNG Contract processes marred with bribery and fraud. THE SHEHU SHAGARI administration of 1979-1983 was pervasively corrupt. Nigerians are witnesses to how many federal government buildings mysteriously went ablaze after probe and investigation on the financial workings of officials of those buildings.
We underlined also the defunct JOHNSON MATHEY BANK IN LONDON probe in 1985 that beamed light on the financial crimes and corrupt practices of the government of Shehu Shagari administration. This particular Bank was another conduit from which party members was transfer HARD CURRENCY out of Nigeria. One of such is Mallam UMARU DIKKO who transferred over six billion pounds to London bank. There were many like him issuing unwarranted import license to Asian importers thereby transferring pounds and dollars out from the national treasury. THE BABANGIDA era enshrined fraud and corruption, writing it on tablets of stone. He never gave account of the GULF WAR windfall estimated at $12.4 billion dollars. In spite of hid deliberate annulment of free and fair election, he is still today living happily in his exquisite MINNA mansion built with looted public fund. BEFORE his election as president of Nigeria MUHAMADU BUHARI in Chatham House said that his interest is to fight corruption, tackle insecurity, and create employment opportunities. In doing this he said" I will, if elected, lead the way with the force of personal example'. Welcoming the newest ambassadors from Britain and Switzerland he also applauded what he described as renewed support from Britain and Switzerland in the recovery and repatriation of public fund stolen from Nigeria. He called for speedy investigation and prosecution of corrupt former Nigeria officials and their accomplices. He reconfirmed that foreign anti crime agencies had already given his administration relevant information and provided intelligence on public funds stolen and illegally transferred to personal accounts. In this direction, BUHARI between 1983-1985 was directly involved in massive corruption and looting of public fund. The fifty-three 53) suitcases scandal came up in 1984 during the currency change policy of his military dictatorship. He ordered the inspection of every case arriving the country not minding who is involved.
The suitcases were ferried through Muritala mohammed airport without custom check and BUHARI's ADC who carried them was Major Mustapha Jokolo; while ATIKU ABUBAKAR was the area comptroller of customs in charge at the airport. BUHARI in declaring his assets was actually very economical with the truth. He deliberately lied to" FELLOW NIGERIANS “just to cover up his loot as military junta 1983-1985, as commissioner for petroleum and chairman Nigeria National petroleum cooperation 1976-1978, as sole administrator Petroleum Trust Fund( PTF)and presently Nigeria president and minister of petroleum resources . BUHARI is yet to assert his incorruptibility which was the bane of his campaign speeches. He has only chosen flimsy excuses to divert attention from his incompetence. His sympathizers said his body language is enough to eradicating corruption. But if BUHARI is fighting corruption, why is the likes of ROTIMI AMAECHI,RAJI FASHOLA,AHNED TINUBU,ATIKU ABUBAKAR,ROCHAS OKOROCHA,RABIU KWANKWASO,IBRAHIM LARMODE ,OBASANJO,BABANGIDA,SULE LAMIDO and others still walking freely in our streets? Why is it that BUHARI never looked into the case files of his party members who are leading figures in corruption? IT is laughable to say he is fighting corruption when he neglected them and keep witch hunting apparent opposition. Is it because they stole state funds to finance his flamboyant campaign? Today those on EFCC and ICPC wanted list are his personal choice to be made ministers of this corrupt ridden republic called Nigeria.
