FLASH BACK: Igbos Vote Based on Their Stomach – Wole Soyinka

FLASH BACK:  Igbos Vote Based on Their Stomach, They Suffer From Incurable Money Mindedness – Wole Soyinka

Published By Family Writers

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has described the Igbos as people who can be predicted when it comes to voting.

According to him, The Igbos vote based on their stomach and have an incurable money mindedness.

Prof. Soyinka said this while delivering a lecture titled ‘Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African and African American Research”, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

“Igbos remained unrepentant and resolute towards their strategic objective of secession at worst; or a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction at best,” he said at the lecture which held on April 29.

The call was honoured by governors in the two principal Ibo states, though without fanfare.

The Igbos are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain.

Muhammadu Buhari was the better of the two evils as the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan had been an unmitigated disaster and failure.

It was a painful decision to tell people to vote Buhari, but the country needed a new beginning.

I was more against Jonathan, than I was pro-Buhari. “Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation witnessed time and time again under Jonathan, who was increasingly becoming intolerant of opposition in an escalating streak of impunity and authoritarian madness, which was most blatant and unconscionable.

The ‘militricians’ – soldiers turned politicians in power – aren’t looking for excellence; their civilian cohorts are worse.

Short cuts and how to circumvent the system for the profit of a few are the norm of governance.

Those who do honest work are derided as lacking the skill to fit it.

Ironically, things haven’t quite changed a bit after 16 years of democracy in the country.” he said

  1. Prof Wole, Igbo did not voted because of their stomach. I personally, I did not like any of them as candidate but instead of voting Buhari the Chief genocidist and Boko-haram terrorist the pedophilia, I will rather vote Jonathan. That's is what I did

  2. Wole I used to think you had a. Sense of reasoning but now I see you are a total idiot and a man with low esteem who mistakenly obtained cheap recognition

  3. How can you say that you think he had a sense of reasoning and that he mistakingly obtained cheap recognition when his brothers actually stole the 'Nobel Prize' recognition for him from Chinua Achebe. He must misbehave because he is carrying what is bigger than him, he never sweated for getting it so it is part of debt he is paying. A man who worked for what he got is always sound and stable in it. Wole is a grey headed man without wisdom in him.

  4. ONLY AN EVIL FOOL CANNOT VOICE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JONATHAN AND BUHARI. AND WOLE SOYINKA IS AN IDIOT TO THINK IGBOS AND BIAFRANS WILL VOTE BUHARI WHO COMMANDED SOLDIERS THAT KILLED US DURING THE BIAFRA-NIGERIA WAR.

  5. Well... I apparently became the only non IGbo to comment.....

I think the whole of the IGbo or lemme be objective enough to say a large chunk of the IGbo populace still believes in Jonathan despite the rot he caused our dear nation... But d truth is because Buhari led the war against them in the Biafra war of which the Igbos started... Do u expect him to lead the soldiers against his people u also led soldiers from Ojukwu against him, but ur cry is that of a loser, u lost the battle and decided to become the enemy of state... I have just one thing to state... Without apology... Before the mantle of leadership will fall into your hands five generations would have gone.... And we will not divide as a nation... It will be a punishment for you to learn wisdom and know what it means to be a member of a family!!! Which is what Nigeria is... A family with many children!!
    God Bless Nigeria!!!

    1. Parasitic leper. Nigeria is not a country/family but a zoo.we don't need presidency of the zoo republic, we need BIAFRA and wether you believe it or not BIAFRA will come. Just as God visited Egypt with plagues before they let ISREAL go so will he visit NIGERIA with plagues until BIAFRA is led by its moses(nnamdi kanu) to the promise land. Then after Yoruba and hausa can now build the zoo of their dreams together.
