THE ONGOING UGLY TREND IN RIVERS STATE CONCERNING THE "MEN ON APRON"

THE ONGOING UGLY TREND IN RIVERS STATE CONCERNING THE "MEN ON APRON"

Recent developments in Rivers State, tends to unsettle the existing relative peace and tranquility within this part of Biafraland. Sadly, sworn enemies of the people are bent on stirring up the "hornet nest" .

This time around, it is no longer Islamic terrorism, militancy, cultism, armed robbery or kidnapping related issues but social/economic terrorism orchestrated by "Men On Apron" who claim to be traffic agents. Despite the prevalent economic strangulation presently being driven by political gladiators and Northern Arewa hooligans that have gravely boxed the geographical entity called Nigeria into an irredeemable comatose and nocturnal dilemma, some gullible and misguided individuals are shamelessly conniving with the Islamic oppressors to inflict more pains and injuries on the already overburdened Biafrans.

It remains factually evidential, to point out the extreme difficulty the less privileged on the street has, to afford even a square meal daily not to mention handling additional economic burden.

This crop of Apron Wearers go about within Port Harcourt (Igweocha), hijacking vehicles and extorting huge amounts of money from motorists who park by, to pick up necessary items from shops and other sale points. Some of the victims of these opportunistic hooligans who are masquerading as traffic officials, told Family Writers Press Correspondent that varying sums of money ranging from twenty thousand Naira (N20,000) and above, were occasionally expended to reclaim their impounded vehicles.

Further investigations prove that the trend has seriously and negatively affected the business fortunes of the products sellers as customers no longer stop by for patronage. Consequently, shop owners in the city of Port Harcourt decry low turnovers due to the unholy activities of these apron wearing men. These so-called traffic officials are never conspicuously sighted at any junction to ensure free flow of traffic but rather, criminally major on impoundment of vehicles indiscriminately, within the Port Harcourt metropolis. Quite a number of task force operatives have before now, emerged with diverse uniforms, who most often move around in company of armed Nigeria Police and Civil Defense personnel, to harass and hoodwink innocent citizens.

The Rivers State Government should therefore expedite action to curb the excesses of these hooligans whose actions can trigger off crisis in the State. The ugly resultant effect of attached to hawkish antecedents of these apron wearing men should proactively be stemmed. It should not be unleashed on the already dehumanized, overburdened and suffocating masses. If such traffic operatives must be allowed, the government should adequately orientate them on the best applicable traffic-friendly and civil related approaches. There should be spirited sensitization of the public about the operational principles of the new traffic agency.

While we fight to extricate ourselves from the heightened shackles of slavery in Nigeria, we must vehemently resist additional oppressive antics of few opportunists who find themselves in positions of whatever government related services.

Biafra remains the only antidote to the myriads of evil and maladministration bedevilling this British enterprise called Nigeria.
