A Warning to our Biafran Daughters

A Warning to our Biafran Daughters
By Richard Izuchukwu Oragwuncha
(For Family Writers)

'Okwa mmadu nwe ogodo ewu na’ata' simply means, who owns the garment being defiled by a goat. This fantasy of “my sister my enemy” is ridiculous and if the southerners should respect their culture, they need not be told when and when not to give out the hand of their daughters in marriage. The Hausas commonly refer to the Southerners as infidels (Harunee’s). This reference includes men, women and children. It is a sacrilege according to the Hausas for a holy Hausa born to get married to an infidel.  You despise a man yet asking for the hand of his daughter in marriage this is mockery and an avenue for one’s own daughter to go begetting her father’s enemy. You must appreciate one first before appreciating any of his belongings.

It is sacrilegious for a Hausa girl to walk with a Southerner. It is life threatening for a Southerner to be suspected having a carnal knowledge of a Hausa girl. If there be a reason why a Hausa girl be given to a Southerner for marriage he must be cleansed according to the Islamic doctrine and he must repent and become a strong believer in Islam. This chapter basically is for our ladies who will never understand that love must consider who it is falling for. Though the bible referred to the women as weaker vessels but even at that they have guardians. Even if they don’t, the environment therein they are and their experiences should serve them a better guardian.

We call the waywardness of our women today civilization but that is stupidity at its peak. My father told me that before the civil war, the Northerners referred to the Igbos/Easterners as bekin bature (a white man in a black skin). If by the virtue of circumstances a Hausa man knowingly or unknowingly touches an Igbo lady/girl, he will rejoice home as if he won a trophy. But today, it is quite a different issue as anything can go with our daughters and women. It is said that before the war, it was punishable for an Igbo girl to stand with a Hausa man for no legal commercial reason(s). If she be questioned and she has nothing reasonable for an answer, she will be banished from that (northern) state.

So many cases of the abuse of Southern ladies and ritual murdering of most of them at a time became an everyday occurrence. It never stopped being a tale of “one Alhaji Picked her up and she never returned”. The pride of a woman is her body an expose of it drastically defames her reputation.
If a young man is making advances towards a lady, he will begin by sounding meek and responsible no matter how irresponsible he may be. He speaks with a soft voice, eloquently and give valuable gifts, dress responsibly, walk majestically, in fact every possible thing that he can do to attract the ladies respect. He will go extra mile to achieving it. But from the very day he will have canal knowledge of the said lady, he automatically becomes the king. He will start seeing himself as a lord over the woman and at this point the woman is emotionally defeated.

This is where the biblical course on Eve takes effect outside wedlock, because the woman has practically taken her position under the man. But before now, both persons shared equal respect that is if the woman’s is not higher. See Gen. 3:16. He will give autocratic commands some times; he will send the woman away in a slave like manner. And from that day, the woman becomes as little as nothing before him. But if the same woman in question can keep herself and by all means avoid any close contact with the man, she will command a great deal of respect for a long time. And the man in his extreme quest for his lust will stop at nothing to achieving his goal thereby adding a greater value to the person of the woman. Most times this leads to the development of true love that may end up in marriage.

This is how sacred the body of a woman should be, but the reverse is the case. The body of our daughters today is more like a public toilet where even dogs go to ease up.The desire of the flesh is natural; the abuse of it makes one irresponsible before man and sinful before God. Love and romance is a good thing to shear but shearing with someone who regards you less makes you a standing jest at all time. This is not common among the core Hausa women. Adamu an indigene of Kano happened to fall in love with a young Igbo woman from Imo state whom he eventually married. His parents were never comfortable with the marriage as they felt that their son got married to an infidel.

They warned that he should let go the woman and get married to a Hausa person but Adamu refused. When the pressure was much, he packed out of the house and went to rent an apartment in a place far away from their family home. Adamu believed no body from his family would ever find out where he was living so he felt so comfortable and continued with his marriage. Already, they had two kids. Two of the woman’s siblings packed in with them and they all lived as a family.  One day, they woke up to find a letter forced into the house through a slit opening by the door. The letter was a threat that the marriage must stop or else they (Adamu and his house) will suffer. People convinced him to ignore the threat that someone might be pulling his legs. So it was that they ignored the letter and continued with their marriage. One night some men invaded the house killed Adamu, his wife and the two kids. Only the woman’s siblings managed to escape but in different directions. Not knowing that they both survived until they met in Lagos and told the story.

  2. What about the men? Ihe di be odu dikwa be nkwo. Our sons should equally not have anything to do with the Hausa girls. Yes, that of our daughters seem obvious, but still, our sons are involved. The key here is that all Biafrans should avail themselves of that opportunity of knowing really who Northerners are and indeed what their culture, value system and perceptions especially about the Biafrans are.

    1. Very well said. Biafrans should come to the realisation of their true sacred identity and avoid mingling with those who are not worth being with.
