GREED AND FEAR: RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SILENCE AMONG BIAFRA POLITICAL CLASS-- REPORT

GREED AND FEAR: RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SILENCE AMONG BIAFRA POLITICAL CLASS-- REPORT

By Ifeanyi Chijioke

For Family Writers

There have been burning questions relating to Nnamdi Kanu's case, the silence among the political class of south-south and south-east has become worrisome and deafening. The entire indigenous people of South-south and South-east have raised their voices and conducted the highest number of protest with mammoth crowd. Demanding one thing in unity and each time they come out to protest, they are massacred. The worrisome one was the one caught in camera which subsequently went viral online. This massacre that was tagged genocide in some quarters did not even trigger condemnation by the political class in Biafra. This however became more disturbing owing to the fact, these people massacred on daily basis are the same people that voted them. From legal point of view, these peaceful Biafra campaigners or activists being murdered have committed no crime as the right to agitate is the major component of democracy. However, no law has been able to criminalize their activities and even the Federal government of Nigeria made a press statement that the course of the Biafra agitators is legitimate. This however ought to give ground for total condemnation of the cold genocide going on in Biafra land. The political class have behaved like people that have lost their conscience, the serial genocide going on needs to be addressed. This however, prompted the need for this survey.

Ifeanyi Chijioke of Family Writers took time to conduct anonymous survey in south-south and south-east.  As soon as Nnamdi Kanu was arrested on October 14th 2015 in Lagos, there was apprehension of fear and which prompted Ohaneze Ndigbo to deny Nnamdi Kanu, speaking to the press, Chris Elomunoh, the Chairman of Ohaneze in Anambra state openly said that Biafra has died and as such do not know Nnamdi Kanu or what he fights for. There was a slight division as the mainstream Ohaneze decided to be diplomatic with a man that ought to have all their support. This however urged Buhari to act without discretion, to the extent of denying Nnamdi Kanu bail and contravening legal process. Two competent courts of jurisdiction ordered the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu but it was undermined. Report has it that Buhari took such step because he had the support of the political class in South-south and south-east. Before the political class and groups could realize the stake and effect of persecuting their own, they tried to come in by unanimously demanding for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, it was a little bit late because they have already given Buhari the gut to trample on their own. Nobody ever knew that if Nnamdi Kanu is not jointly fought for, it would reach to everyone of us because they would be convinced we lack the cohesiveness and fight our own. This illustration can be compared to Buhari or Northern position on Boko Haram. Despite the fact that Boko Haram is a banned or known terrorist organization, the north defended them to the extent Buhari noted that attack against Boko Haram is attack against the north. How much more Nnamdi Kanu that is on a legitimate course and in a peaceful and lawful way, attack against him and the people of old Eastern region was not considered an attack. It beats every imagination what actually transpired. Biafrans especially of Igbo speaking extraction are always the victims of One Nigeria.

For failing to proactively address Nnamdi Kanu's case with the thought it is only about Nnamdi, they failed to know that Nnamdi is a symbol of the people of Biafra and the way Kanu is treated will definitely affect every old Easterners. Chief Victor Umeh was the victim, Fayose has been talking and enjoying his freedom of speech, criticizing Buhari without looking back, what has Buhari done? Buhari cannot do anything because the West will come down heavily on Buhari. Just for criticizing and speaking out against Fulani herdsmen that was rated fourth most dangerous terrorists. Chief Victor Umeh was arrested and humiliated to the extent he was warned to never talk again and sadly, he has been made dumb, he neither talk or say a word, he is today under the clutches of fear. The simple error was inability to defend his own on the account of choice, hatred or stake weighing, Victor Umeh today cannot talk and should he opposingly talk, he would be slammed with one charge or another as Nnamdi Kanu was slammed. Had he fought to show Buhari that he can't mess with our people, Buhari won't have the gut to arrest him. Speaking to a top Politician in Delta state, who pleaded anonymity, he said " Chief Victor Umeh is a campaigner, it was not his fault that he did not oppose persecution of Nnamdi Kanu that today reached him; we were all afraid" but when questioned why he has not talked " How will I talk? our culture has it that the kindred must talk before a case is brought to the village square, we are Biafrans but they divided us, we have realized their deceit but still South-east ought to lead the campaign as the Umunna while we join". Hence Victor Umeh was silenced and intimidated,it will keep coming if Biafra political class keep being afraid.

Boko Haram despite being a terrorist organization,Northern politician and law makers kept calling for their demand to be implemented but when Ekweremadu mentioned Biafra on upper legislative chambers, he was assaulted and abused for making a just call. The reason is simple, after dividing Biafra, she lost her mind and became selfish. When Nnamdi Kanu came to correct the abnormalities, he was illegally arrested and persecuted; the initial time left to redeem it elapsed and today the political class try to redeem it, it has turned too little, too late. Clearly assessing the development, it is worth commending that Ekweremadu is making bold move but to succeed, there must be significant push. The reality remains that the political class can resolve Kanu's case but greed and fear of losing their political position is a threat to what is right and expected of them. The political class cannot give or bring Biafra and even not expected to fight for Biafra, the responsibility before them is their primary mandate, if self-determination is a legal thing and if Nnamdi has not killed or anyone killed for him, if he has asked for Biafra in a peaceful and lawful way, then what is his crime and why must their child be incarcerated?  The entire people of Biafra- from Igbanke to Igala have demanded for Kanu's release and died in the bit of protesting for Kanu's release, the question remains, what has the Biafran political class done to ease the burden of the people they represent?.

A reliable source to family writers who spoke to some heads of government institutions confirmed thus, “they all have interest in Biafra but they want to strike a deal and Nnamdi Kanu being the kind of person he is, he refused to engage any politician and so they feel excluded or targeted” but professor Ifeanyi Efobi Anthony who spoke from London concerning the political class held a different view. “When a dictator is in power, fear becomes the order of the day. The South-south and Sou-theast politicians who are the Easterners’ have been caught by fear. When the law court can no-longer save you from oppression; you really have no other option but to keep quiet. Look at what the dictator is doing over there in Nigeria and none of them is talking or brave enough to confront injustice. This is not a matter of greed but fear of a dictator”
Family writers’ source further made open “a commissioner of police asked, if he assist in achieving Biafra will he retain his status in Biafran police force? While this is the case some have as well demanded for a compromise. The politicians really want to know their fate before openly taking a position. In some quarters, they believe that Nnamdi Kanu is so arrogant and would not give them any concern as he tends to value a common Biafran more than them. These people with such belief secretly fight for the restoration of Biafra because Biafra is unstoppable, no matter if they fight or not, Biafra must surely come and so they secretly keyed in”

Chima Onyekachi of Family writers who assigned himself to have the view of the political class in Biafra, met a stumbling block as every effort to get to speak to politicians was futile. When he confronted a top political ally of Minister of works Dr Chris Ngige for an interview, he had asked for an interview on the state of the country and the peaceful agitation for Biafra restoration championed by Indigenous People Of Biafra; he received a reply- text message “I just saw your text, please if what you want to interview me on is based on these things you said; please do not bother calling me because I won’t talk to you on any of these issues. Please I do not grant interview on very sensitive issues like the issue you raised. I am indisposed to talk about agitation for Biafra and detention of Nnamdi Kanu please. It is a volatile area on any academic, moral, religious or legal issues devoid of current political situation in the country. You are welcomed, good night”

However, Chima Onyekachi was not satisfied with the response he received as he pushed further. Chima made the politician to be aware that he would even take the interview on condition of anonymity and lobbied further “I decided to meet you because of your integrity” but the politician will would not love to put in print said “yes I think I have integrity but I am not controversial. I do not like to involve myself on controversial matters and very emotional and sensitive matter in which people do not appreciate honest views. The matter is of national interest and sectional in nature so I avoid such matters whether anonymous or not”

This in conclusion and no matter how one may put it defines the fact that fear and greed are responsible for the silence in Biafra among her political class. As much as this silence keeps prevailing, it poses a great threat to the political and economical safety of the people. Now that people of Biafra are vulnerable to people in power because her political class fear or out of greed do not fight for her people, the entire people should come together and decide their future. Today, Biafra is the future the people have embraced.

  1. The common people Biafra are greater in number than the political class of the southsouth and southeast .And it was this same common people that activated their election success making them to be called political class otherwise single-handedly they can never be where they are today. They know this is the naked truth. And very soon election reason will set in and they will come back to the people for vote.Thank God that they have exposed their EVIL mindset on the people as BIAFRA issue has brought revealed their innermost hatered on their people and how cowardly they are.Come to think, it's not political class that caused Gadafi to be removed,it's not political class that caused Mubarak to be removed .No Biafran common man or woman should expect southsouth or southeast political class to bring Biafra.People should bear in mind what happend in the Senate recently when Ekweremadu mentioned BIAFRA how many of our Senators there said a word.We must keep on keeping on.We made them successful politicians and after they wish it's only them and their families that will live in the Moon. All hail Biafra, my people.
