ST. EDMUND’S INVASION: PRIEST UNDER FEAR TO SPEAK: THREATENED BY AUTHORITIES

ST. EDMUND’S INVASION: PRIEST UNDER FEAR TO SPEAK: THREATENED BY AUTHORITIES

By Ifeanyi Chijioke and Chima Onyekachi of Family Writers

We set out to St. Edmund church with the hope that the priest would sufficiently give us first hand information on what actually happened. The reverse was the case as everything we thought was contrary to what we saw. The church is a big one with a mission school built inside the compound, not much far from the field mapped out for the heroes’ day. The Priest will tell us in details what actually happened; we had nothing less than what was on our mind.

After Nkpor Park, you have to drive a distance before a bill board ‘St. Edmund’s Catholic church’, a narrow street by the left led us to the church. By the right is a Mechanic workshop before the Rev. Father’s quarter and we advanced to see the church. Confused as students were coming out, but a keen observation told us that a mission school is therein. While coming into the compound, people were already looking at us strangely and fearfully, trying to decipher what we actually came to do.

We majestically and confidently walked into the church compound, while the care-taker of the church compound was mopping at us, a young man thought to be the security was also observing us, two women at students’ canteen also conscious of us. We walked straight to the men sited in front of the non-functional church and enquired about the Rev. Father “He travelled outside the state for a burial”. We glanced at an obituary poster before us and saw the date of the burial has passed. We realized we are being lied to, with the care-taker’s inconsistent lips and fearful expressing as he could not look into our eyes summed it up.

We pushed further with questions “Is here not St. Edmund’s catholic church?” we asked
“This is the church, some journalists came here two days ago, why were you people not here then?” he asked without firmness.
“We were on another tour; we have been in this town for pat three days. What actually happened here on Monday morning, at about 3.00am” we asked but they were quick to oppose us
“Nothing happened here, did you see anything here? The press can talk!” they defensively responded as we began to assess the church. A catholic church has never been locked before but the church was under lock, no movement or people coming to pray or do anything, it was indeed isolated.

“Can we speak to the principal of the school” we asked again, he stood and paced a yard and paused. Turned to us thoughtfully and said “The principal is not around” it became clearer to us that there is a conspiracy or agreement never to talk or say what happened.
We began to inspect the church, the shattered windows of the church were significant and fresh, and bullets had passed through them, the soldiers shot sporadically and to killed innocent people. Chukwuemeka Nduka who conducted the inspection noted “these are where their bullets penetrated and there is no how they won’t kill as many people as possible” he said as he pointed the shattered glasses.

We left the church in disappointment, walking down to enter our car; Chukwuemeka Nduka opted for interrogation and covered investigation. He had met some men who stared at us initially, bought bottles of beer for them, which was when he engaged them in a discussion. “After the earliest morning invasion of the church, we came to our workshop though part of the heroes’ day. Soldiers and some official men came here and warned that nobody should talk to anybody, it was a warning and also a threat” the people we would not love to have in print for security reasons said.

A source who later spoke to us after she realized we are pro-Biafra journalists confirmed that the priest will never talk and has officially told everyone not to talk. “Soldiers came here and spoke with the priest, the priest said that nobody should talk, even the students were called out on assembly ground that nobody should talk to anyone. They have also picked out all the tear gas canisters used on heroes’ day, they are working tirelessly to eradicate evidence” the woman said to us.
On the other hand, another team of investigators who went to the church noted that they met the priest but effort to get him to talk proved fruitless. “I met the priest and tried to know what happened, he just waved me off, he said ‘no no nothing happened here, did you see anybody here’ that was all he told me” the lead-investigator told us.

  3. well said Nwa Chineke. Because an Islamist fundamentalist extremist hausa-fulani soldiers threaten the clergy and he decided to speak the language of satan ''lies''. Are they expecting the student to turn out tomorrow to be truthful personalities while they are been trained to lie. Rev. Father the world want to know what happened in your church and the sheeps in church premises God almighty has appointed you to look over. God and devil will not forgive you if you lie and inspire your subjects to lie to the world and Biafrans who really want to know what actually happened that night in your church premises.
