NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY: CELEBRATION OF IMPUNITY, RETROGRESSION AND DEATH
An article titled "IS THERE NO HOPE AT ALL?", written by a Catholic Priest called Reverend Father Akam Felix, in his description of the hopelessness of Nigeria and her citizens, said "The West has conquered the space and the United States of America is creating Space Force. But Nigeria is yet to conquer her pathways and her citizens are yet falling down from palm trees. Rather than fund education and research, whopping sums of money are being pumped into elections whose winners are always known years before. Our best brains rot in mortuaries called public schools while the wards of the rich despite their knot-meg brains study in the world's best universities at the cost of public funds. They return home with results just good enough for coordinating Sunday school activities". This is a little summation of developments in a country that is claiming to be celebrating fifty eight (58) years of independence.
"An average Nigerian child has no future. His basic education is not guaranteed. If he pulls through and writes his Joint Admission and Matriculation Board Examination (JAMB), there is no admission. If he gets admission, industrial actions (strikes) will frustrate his study calendar. If he writes his final exams, it will take years to get his results and cleared for the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC). At the end of the compulsory service, he will need political connections to help secure a job either through occult initiation, bribery or other dubious practices. At work place, he is subjected to the pains of non-salary payment. If he is paid in arrears, he is confronted with bank protocols riddled with poor internet services to effect withdrawals. If he eventually succeeds, he is robbed on his way back home". All these absurdities, the young graduate in Nigeria faces, even as they proudly celebrate at 58 years.
A Nigerian is confronted with series of life threatening nightmarish experiences. "He travels by air, it is a matter of life and death. At bus terminals, he is at the mercy of bomb explosions planted by terrorists and hoodlums. The roads are neither safe. They are gravely dilapidated, infested by trigger-happy army/police/task force officers who are daily extorting money from already overburdened citizens, kidnappers and armed robbers are busy doing brisk enterprises with reckless abandon. On the waters, pirates are on rampage. The Nigerian treks out of frustration most times only to run into the bloody activities of Boko Haram and Fulani killer herdsmen terrorists". He manages to rent a house and establish a business in the city, revenue collectors of diverse kinds would not allow him be. If he opts to have some rest indoors, he has to endure the pains of power (electricity) outages. Stepping outside to take natural breeze, he has to contend with the menace of noise/air pollution and all manner of anti-social evils.
Sharing his experiences on social media platforms, he is cyber-mobbed by fanatics of political/religious merchants. At the age of 30 years, he has no hope of getting settled in life. He persistently battles with dreams unfulfilled. There is absolutely a total display of despondency and hopelessness in the country called Nigeria. There is desperation, frustration, disappointment, thuggery, hooliganism, hunger, unemployment, retrogression, victimization, spates of Islamic terrorism, government- orchestrated deaths, cultism, cabalism, political chauvinism, gross nepotistic tendencies, suppression, lawlessness, corruption, tyranny, falsehood, enslavement, injustice, amongst so many other ills, yet they are celebrating 58 years of independence.
Nigeria is undoubtedly, a shameless country. A place where mediocrity, lies and deception thrive. A place where the President who is supposed to be integrity personified, tenders ShopRite receipt for a school certificate and rents 17 Senior Lawyers (SANs) to put up a defense on his behalf in court. It is only in Nigeria that cabinet members get appointed on falsified certificates. All sectors of the Nigerian State are bedeviled with corruption at varying degrees. The moral decadence is disappointedly alarming.
At 58 years, Nigerian politicians still employ the usage of delusional provision of essential amenities like pipe-born water, roads etcetera, as electoral manifestos to hoodwink the gullible. Steady supply of electricity has remained evasive. Ordinary tooth pick sticks are yet being imported from abroad even in this 21st century. School children and students take their studies in dilapidated classrooms, sitting on bare floors and under mango trees. Millions of inhabitants in Nigeria today, cannot boast of affordable meals. Virtually all domestic needs are exported from abroad.
Nigeria, a British contrapted enslavement enclave, can best be described as an impairant of happiness, progress and fulfillment. In the country is abysmal display of suffering,
mischief, misery, harm and death. Nigeria has assumed a the position of a monstrous evil giant of Africa. She is detestable and loathsome by all standards. At 58, Nigeria has absolutely nothing good to celebrate about besides fraud, deprivation, putrefaction, moral perversion and terror. "If you are looking out for a definitive description of a poisoned chalice, just look out for what Britain handed over to Nigeria at independence", so echoed Reverend Father Akam.
What appears most tragic about it all is that Nigeria's failure is by design. Her collapse stems from rulership deficiency based on institutionalized "extractive" economy which destroys incentives, discourages innovations and gravely saps the talent of citizens. It creates titled playing field and mortgaging of opportunities. Various institutions in Nigeria are purposefully orchestrated, for the benefits of political elites who advantageously gain from the callous extractions, coming in the form of viable mineral resources, forced labor or protracted monopolistic indices at the expense of the society. This band of taskmasters (elites) benefit from rigged political institutions, wielding their powers to surreptitiously tilt the system to their own advantage. States structured on exploitative tendencies inevitably fail, taking down the entire corrupt system along with them and precipitating immense suffering for their citizens. No wonder then Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the able leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide, rightly called Nigeria a zoo with President Donald Trump of the United States of America, describing President Muhammadu Buhari as lifeless.
